Handout #5

Here is an example of a summary. This is about the article on Napster:

The article entitled Federal Judge Rules Against Napster by Greg Lefevre is about the problem of copyrighted music on the Internet. Recently, a federal judge ruled against an online music service called Napster. The judge said that the company was allowing people to download music for free although they should be paying for it. Metallica is the band that sued Napster. Napster’s lawyers claimed that Napster has no control over this problem They said that Napster can’t tell the difference between copyrighted and non-copyrighted music. The judge’s decision indicated that Napster must take responsibility for this situation. Napster will appeal the ruling. It is clear that this battle is not over.

One of the related links that we looked at had an article called Why Metallica is Suing. The author of this article explained that Metallica is suing Napster because Napster is stealing music from the people who created it. When Metallica originally complained about this situation, Napster responded by denying access to some of its clients who were abusing the system. Metallica said that Napster should have just removed Metallica’s music from Napster’s website. Metallica is concerned that Napster is not only "stealing" from big, famous bands, but it is also indirectly taking money from less well-known musicians who are struggling to make a living.

The other related link led to Napster’s Side of the Story. The writers of this article talked about the background of why copyright laws exist. The writers said that the Supreme Court created copyright to help the arts and sciences, and that it’s also there to help the common people. Therefore, it means that new technology (such as that offered by Napster) should be available to people if they don’t break specific copyright laws. The writer said that Napster actually helps the less well-known musicians by letting a lot of people hear their music.

If you want to write your own opinion, put a short paragraph here, after the summaries.
